Gearing Up for Summer!

Earlier in the month, there was a Five Boro Bike Tour that sent cyclists through 42 miles of NYC car-free streets to help the non-profit charity, Bike New York, promote bicycling and bike safety throughout NYC and beyond. This amazing view of hundreds of cyclists peddling through the city reminded me of a trip I took to Amsterdam a few years ago and how wonderful it was there where everyone rides bicycles. What an amazing world we would live in if everyone rode bicycles, instead of drive cars. There would be fewer fatalities, less road rage, less pollution and best of all; you could see NYC in a whole new light.

The great thing about NYC is there is always something new and exciting to be discovered. However, when riding a bicycle through your neighborhood, you can rediscover your same old route to the grocery store or commute to the cleaners. Riding a bicycle lets you stop and smell the roses a bit and turn your autopilot subway trips into outdoor adventures. That is the great thing about getting out n’ about in zeHood.

And now with the great weather May has been bringing us, why not bike to work or to the grocery market all summer long. After seeing the astounding participation in the recent Five Boro Bike Tour, I now realize that I don’t have to be afraid to bike through the city. I can brush up on my bike safety skills on Bike New York’s site, strap on my helmet and I will be ready to ride. Now, all I have to do is get a bike!

Buh-Bye Do or Die BedStuy!

Currently, I reside in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn famously known as “Do or Die Bedstuy”. The best thing about my neighborhood are the friendly people I encounter on my way to the train, grocery store or my favorite local spot: Colador Café. Colador is this cool, eccentric cubano-style coffee shop with mismatched furniture, funky jazz music playing in the background and amazing coffee! The people are always very nice and there are always great flyers to stay up-to-date on the local happenings.

This weekend I am very excited though because I am moving to Boreum Hill. It is situated in a triangle of cool neighborhoods I enjoy: Cobble Hill, Downtown BK and Fort Greene. It is also right next to Clinton Hill that offers the best doughnut shop you will ever experience cleverly named “Dough”. You have never had a doughnut quite like these before. They are large, fluffy and infused with magical flavor combinations. Try the café’ au lait, passion fruit and cheesecake ones. They are my faves.

But my new place will be right off Atlantic Ave and 2 blocks away from the happening Smith Street. I am sure to find cute boutiques, kitschy cafes and antique stores galore. I look forward to discovering zehood through exploring trendy hot spots, meeting new friendly faces and sharing with my zeLocal friends what my hood is all about.
